I looked back over several of the previous Bulletins to envision
where I would put graphics if I were publishing the newsletter.
There were some instances where it would be appropriate to place
a LINK to a graphic, but NO instances for which a graphic
was essential to the message.
Which means any graphics placed therein would be simply
gratuitous decoration, self-gratification or pandering.
Would you prefer to read a big sheet of paper filled with black
plain text, instead of a beautifully designed newspaper? I'm a
graphic designer and I can tell you that using things like
graphics, custom fonts and colors helps a lot in delivering a
message to the audience. Unfortunately, nowadays everybody seems to
associate HTML emails with spam, thus avoiding them. That's too bad.
Currently, the plain text version of the Bulletin is around 20 kB
(as reported by Apple Mail). A HTML email with 4-5 pictures and
carefully coded HTML can be less than 100 kB in size, meaning that
it will be downloaded in 20 - 30 seconds on a slow 56 kbps internet
connection. I don't think this is such a big issue. But the user
should have the possibility to choose between plain text and HTML.
