Thanks Nicholas for responding to the question - you always have great advice.
Folk in New Zealand and Australia can apply for an ASW account if
* their group is on active status
* they use the correct codes/ application information
* they are listed in the international version of the locator as their group's ambassador at
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/find/
Folks following these guidelines are usually approved, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
The sign up information is available from each region's Regional Liaison (For example, the very able Graeme Moffatt in the Oceania region). You can find your area's liaison at
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/contact/liaisons/
The problem is, if a an ambassador does not use the right code, then the folk at ASW can only contact the specific region / GEO. The regional Apple units do not handle user group registrations, so they say no when asked, and the application is denied; worse, a denial at any point can make a later application even harder to approve.
The user group program has told ASW that they are not required to engage in substantial extra effort when an unclear application comes in, although Jean and the group often put in a lot of work trying to give access where possible. Needless to say, the system is set up for Apple sales folk and we are included as a courtesy, so their extra effort is much appreciated.
Hope this answers the question. Let me know if I can be of help.
