We wrestled with the issue of meetings being too geeky a while back and settled on having "something for everyone" at each meeting. We have 3 sessions; two run during the first hour, and the main session runs during the 2nd & 3rd hours.
The first hour's two sessions are broken into one that concentrates on "Mac 101" topics, while the other one concentrates on more advanced open Mac Q&A. Each of these sessions has a moderator or leader and a laptop with projector & big screen. The Q&A session starts with a 5-minute presentation on something the moderator has found (software, hardware, etc) that he/she considers "cool" or useful.
The general session during the 2nd & 3rd hours tries to cover more than one topic, if possible, to conform to the "something for everybody" philosophy. These topics are usually more elaborate in scope than those during the first hour. The meeting concludes with both a special raffle (semi-big ticket item) and a general raffle of eclectic "stuff" and books suitable for all levels of Mac experience.
In between meetings we have a web-based forum to provide 24/7 support to our membership.
So far, we seem to be "doing well." We do, though, experience the situation where a few members will come for a while, then drift away as they "get what they need" and become more self-sufficient with the Mac; in a way, I think this is a "good thing," and we haven't received any negative feedback so far.
