My answer was a little flippant - sorry about that. Here is my view in
a little more detail.

That 's good question that can't have a single answer. Depends on your
views, abilities and needs. With that in mind, let's talk about email
address.
Yes, dot mac addys are cool. But..
There are advantages to a free "web mail" address. Mainly, if you start
using a fee based email address, you kind of get locked into using it,
and it becomes a pain to change your email addy should you no longer
want to pay. Gmail becomes a very good choice since google allows
access to SMTP server so you can use it with your favorite off line
email reader.
(gmail doesn't seem to play well with mailman lists, however - that's
for a different discussion)
So, For my money :-) , gmail is a better route than either your ISP's
email addy or dot mac.
Now for the balance of the services offered by google and/or dot mac.
The advantages of dot mac are one stop shopping, ease of use and
integration with Mac software. And yes, Apple wants money for that.
People have varying levels of abilities, interest, time available,
etc.. Some of our groups members would have no difficulties piecing
together all of google's services and using them, others not so much.
It would be impossible for me to say one route is better than the
other.
As José's members note, Picasa Web Albums is one less reason to use
.Mac.
Picasa Web Albums was fairly widespread news this week and I'm
surprised that a user group leader was not aware of it.

Just checked again today (8/5) Picasa web site still says it is windows
only. That would be enough to stop most of my members. Also, it is
invite only, which really is not much of an issue, but, still a
barrier.
(Well, we see that there is Mac software there, but the website says
different. )
Finally, there are thousands of cool applications for the Mac,
publishing photo albums is only one. Actually I think most of my group
that would be interested in that are already publishing photo albums (
via dot mac, no doubt). I guess it is a good thing that google is
playing catch up, but no, I am not really that interested in keeping
track of what google is up to. There are more interesting and valuable
things in the Mac world.
