I didn't say I wanted wide coverage. I said I rely on "digested and
concentrated news."
I've used services like MacSurfer in the past. In order to get
anything really useful out of those headlines I found I would have to
trail down most of the links to dig deeper. Way too much time
investment for me with my very active family life away from the
keyboard and video screen. I've chosen the services I rely on over a
dozen years in UG leadership. I'm happy with them.
Let's get back to what brought up this tangent of the discussion for
a moment. You said, "Picasa Web Albums was fairly widespread news
this week and I'm surprised that a user group leader was not aware of
it." When you were kind enough to bring that news to the AUGD list, I
became aware of it. The services I use work. So what if they may lag
a bit?
Now, a key point of my answer that apparently you missed but which
was grasped by others who read here: there is nothing magical about
UG leaders except a willingness to volunteer and help others. I guess
my choice of phrasing was a little too subtle for you. What I
actually wanted to say was that I and others found your remark about
UG leaders rather insulting, implying that somehow I wasn't doing my
job. I would have been surprised it came from a UG leader except that
I know there is nothing magical about UG leaders.
My job as a UG leader is not to predigest everything from the Mac
world and then pass it on to the members of my UG. They can do that
for themselves by subscribing to MacSurfer or whatever other news
sources they may prefer. My job as a UG leader is to help organize my
UG so the members can get together and help each other in a fashion
that works for them. My job as a UG Ambassador is to be a channel of
communications with other UGs.
