Hello all,
It looks like many of the .Mac users see this service as "email with
some added bonuses, like photo sharing, or web publishing (using
iWeb)". This is not true. I believe the real benefits of .Mac are
showing up if you're using two or more computers. In my daily work I
use two Macs: a PowerMac, which is my main computer, and an iBook when
I'm out of the office. Here are the features that make .Mac really
valuable to me:
- Keychain sync. Some people don't even know what the OS X Keychain
is. It's the place where the operating system stores things like
network passwords, mail passwords, website login information etc. I
also keep in the Keychain private notes like bank account information.
When I got the iBook, I was able to carry all those passwords and
notes from the PowerMac, by pressing a button. This is just great. No
more the need to remember tens of login/password pairs for various
websites and forums. Safari fills them in for me, both on the PowerMac
and the iBook.
- Bookmark sync. I have hundreds of bookmarks in Safari. Keeping them
current on both computers is awesome.
- Third-party apps syncing. I use Transmit for FTP. It's using .Mac
for syncing the FTP bookmarks between my computers. NetNewsWire syncs
the RSS newsfeeds and more using .Mac. There are also other 3rd party
apps that know how to work with .Mac.
And finally, .Mac is so easy to use. All the syncing is done in one
place, by clicking on a button, or even automatic.
Best regards,

Indeed. I noted this in an earlier email in this thread. And while a
service's use of Firefox might be a negative to you, it's not to
others. Quite a few Mac users prefer Firefox for various reasons, not
that I do.
