1) Allen, I like the fact that you said UGs instead of AUGs. Here in
Syracuse over the past nearly two years we have developed a very close
working relationship with our PC and Linux counterparts including
leadership meetings, joint events and even a joint membership
offering. The PC group experiences the same issues we do. (The Linux
group is at a younger stage, much like the hobbyist groups that Mac
and PC groups used to be. They don't seem to have quite the same
issues. They're a lot of fun and round things out nicely, though, so
we like to include them in it all too.) As such,
Interesting idea, network with other UG's - here is an interesting
thing, Triangle MUG is the only hardware based UG left in the Research
Triangle Park area, at least that is what I am told. There are,
however, plenty of other software base UG's.
There are 3 campus based (not open to the public) AUG's here. Their
status can change from year to year. We have tried joint programs with
them before not very successful.
Good luck in trying to get these groups together, I think if you plan
it out, it can work. But if it isn't something you work out in advance,
I think you risk division in the group. Of course anyone can attend a
Triangle MUG, when PC questions come up there is the groan and eye
rolling. I think PC users would feel a little left out at our group,
welcome but left out. Truth be told, I'm not really excited to trying
to encourage PC users into the group. We have way too much to cover as
it is, trying to include PC support might be a bit overwhelming.
Besides it seems (per my remark above) down here PC users gave up their
group.
Hope that works out for you.
2) Our three CNY UGs are in the _very_ early stages of planning a
small regional gathering of leaders of nearby UGs to discuss face to
face exactly the issues described by Allen, plus any others that may
come up. If any UGs from our region are interested in attending,
possibly in late September, please e-mail me off-list.
3) Have any other UGs tried something like this? What discussion or
actions grew out of it?
I like the idea of Mac UG's getting together to collaborate. I would
love to see a inter UG event of some type. I think my members would
enjoy that. I'm thinking a photo contest or GB or iMovie. or even just
a video iChat between two UG's.
Hmm, this is something to think about.
