AUGD: AWUG Site License?

Hi All,

At the recent Macworld event, I met at least one other User Group which has made a practice for some time of paying for a "site license membership" in the AppleWorks User Group. I was interested in this because I felt that my particular MUG has not done a great job over the years of providing our own members with support in the area of their use of AppleWorks.

At this particular point in time, we seem to be seeing a gradual shift from AppleWorks toward iWorks, at least in terms of Apple's priorities for future development. AWUG seems to be acknowledging this evolution by embracing iWorks and acknowledging that, some day, it will probably have to change its name to iWUG!

As most of us know, AppleWorks has a long history of being provided by Apple free of charge on various consumer level Macintosh computers, as well as being available for purchase.

When I returned from Macworld and brought up the subject of potentially becoming a site license holder of AppleWorks ourselves, some of our Execs pointed out that Apple does NOT seem to be distributing iWorks in the same manner as it did AppleWorks. In other words, they aren't giving it away for free with consumer level Macintosh computers. So those Execs are saying, "Don't you think that maybe a site license is something that we should have considered several years ago, but which today may not make as much sense because over time there are not going to be as many iWorks users as there are today AppleWorks users, simply because iWorks isn't free the way AppleWorks was for many users?".

I'd be interested in hearing from any other Mac User Group Execs who have adopted the AppleWorks site license approach. I would be particularly interested in hearing how you make the argument for this expenditure which may be of benefit to only a subset of the MUG membership, and I would like to hear whether you accept the notion that in future there will be fewer iWorks users than there are today AppleWorks users, and whether that affects your view of the future value of the site license approach.
