This always irritates me when it comes to articles that discuss Mac viruses or rather, lack of them. It seems all of them contain a paragraph similar to the following from the EWeek article previously mentioned.
"Apple users make up a small fraction of the computing population, and malicious code for the Mac operating system is rare. The last known virus affecting Mac users was the AutoStart worm in 1998, according to Ken Dunham, director of the Rapid Response Team at iDefense in Reston, Virginia."
It seems these magazines have a contract with M$ to put this "disclaimer" and propaganda into every such article! If the small number of Macs were the reason we have no viruses. (The lowest count I ever hear is a 3% marketshare, but IMO, more older Macs are still in use so the actual presence of Macs is much higher.) But even if this were the case, Macs should have at least 3% as many viruses as Windows does, but we have NONE!
I am very sure that if the holes existed that would allow a true Mac virus, there would be a plethora of them. It's not the processor or number of users that promote viruses; It's the flaws in the Operating System! The primary reason Macs don't have viruses (IMO) is that viruses just can't guess an Administrator Password!
