Hello,
I don't react often (as ambassador of AUG Luxembourg) but who cares...
I would in my opinion encourage users to be aware of what they are doing : 1) Do not allow an application to open files automatically ; 2) Do not open applications/ documents that you didn't install ; 3) Do not enter your password if you're not installing something (eg no need of a password to open images)
Mac OS ask if you really want to open an application for the first time, and prompt for the password to install stuff in "hardcore" folders therefore if you're cautious enough you don't need a so called "anti-virus" software.

Since there are NO MACINTOSH VIRUSES, no software is necessary. Other malware like 'worms" and 'Trojan horses" are something else.
Just be aware that this is seen by some as splitting hairs. So be specific with your descriptions and I would urge Mac advocates to volunteer the distinction rather than avoiding the question.
The fact is that the software used to remove trojans is called "Anti-Virus". I would encourage everyone to make use of it. There are commercial, shareware and free varieties.
