Hi,

There's nothing particular about running a G5 tower as a server (other than it's a fine server with not much room for expansion in terms of storage and doesn't come with a OS X Server license))

What You probably need is info on the *software* side of things, because that's what really matters, especially in a SOHO environment since the hardware load isn't usually that great.
The best place by far for info on OS X server is Apple's server page:
http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/

(It's really quite unique and extremely cool for a company to publish all their documentation for a major product like that!)

I suggest You skim through the Tech Briefs on Open Directory, File Services, iChat (more of a "cool" thing... :)) ofcourse any others that you think might be interesting to Your audience.

The other option ofcourse would be to talk about using the workstation version (ie the normal Tiger that
comes with every mac) as a server. Info on this is much more fragmented, but http://www.afp548.com
is a fantastic resource if You're willing to dig (maynly focused on the server version, but has other stuff as well). They also have tutorials on various subjects.

Here you could for example mention ACL-s (ie how they bring OS X much closer to what we were used to in OS 9 in regards to file permissions) support for those is built into tiger. You can read more general info on them in the File Services server documentation (implementing them in tiger workstation is different though....)

Windows integration works pretty well thanks to Samba. :)

... just my 0.02 EUR

Hi all,

I'm researching some material for a talk at our small UG and would appreciate some pointers to online information I can draw on please. THe subjects I am looking at are:

1) Using a G5 PowerMac as a server

2) Windows and Macs - working together

I hope someone knows of some good tutorials/sites to look at.

Many thanks,

Mac
