This is an interesting discussion, it's always good to find out how other clubs do things. One question I think has been left out would be "How many members does you club have?"
We have a very small club, with limited growth potential in a country in which we do not speak the mother tongue, but we have a few committed members which is good. More would be better, and I hope to learn something from this topic.
We meet in a an old building that was first used in 1476 as a monastery, it was used as a women's prison from 1830 to 1995, and has been used for community use since 2001.
We pay CHF 25.- per meeting (about GBP 11.00; USD 19.00) and have access to an OHP and a beamer (which nobody has the key for to set it up so we just use a laptop). As we get mostly less than 10 people at each meeting this works fine for now.
We don't charge an annual fee yet, but cover all our costs with a charge of just CHF 5.- per person per meeting. We have so far only had member presentations, but they have mostly been pretty good as we have some real professionals as members and they always come up with something interesting to say.
Favourite topic with non-members seems to be anything to do with sound/music - but not iPods strangely. Least favourite topic is photography. That's just our group I guess.
One topic we haven't covered yet is "Using Mac OS X as a server" which has been asked for. I certainly need to attend one of these sessions as every time I try to load Tiger OS X Server on top of Tiger OS X running on a PowerMac Dual Core I get kernel panics no matter what I do. Terrible software design from Apple that one. (If you have a solution please, please let me know!)
Our goal for the next year must be to just survive. Whilst I am finding there are many more Mac users than I thought in the locality, getting them to come to what is perceived as a "computer club" is pretty tough, and the native German speakers in the area have their own club. Still, we're optimistic.
Apart from this insane problem trying to install OS X server I am very happy with the 10 months I have been a Mac user, witnessed by my purchases of MacMini as a first step, then PowerBook 15", then PowerMac DC 2.0 and then OS X server to replace our Linux server in the office.
I must be converted!
Cheers
Mac
PS Please Apple (if you're listening) - fix it so OS X server can be loaded on top of OS X on Dual Core PowerMacs! It is after all YOUR software and YOUR hardware.... on sale at the same time and seemingly not compatible with each other. Hmmm...
