AUGD: AppleWorks and Spreadsheets

I never got into using AW for anything, never needed a spreadsheet while I had even early versions of FileMaker ( before it was even called FileMaker! ), it could just as easily display data as a spreadsheet but offered all the advantages of a database for sorting and finding record groups.

I see many people still complaining about lack of support from Apple in providing spreadsheet capabilities in the iWork 'suite'. While I agree that there is still nothing in it that would satisfy the professional market, I would like to point out that there is already a very capable spreadsheet application available for the Apple. AND it does NOT come from Redmond, WA! ;-)

Until people realize that Microsoft is not the only software developer ( except Apple ) they may never consider even looking for alternatives to Word, Excel, etc. That's truly unfortunate as there are excellent alternatives out there. For BOTH an excellent word processor AND a spreadsheet, one need look no further than Mariner Software. This company has been around for quite some time, is Mac only and has two apps can read and write .doc and .xls formats. ( Actually, Calc can save as SLYK format ). And you can actually still get versions for OS 9! This company cares about Mac users! ( No, I'm not employed by them! Just a happy customer! )

As for drawing and painting:
There is GraphicConverter, but I think PS Elements is much easier to use by most people. It provides the biggest feature of PhotoShop: layers and many others that may never be used by most people.

Drawing _is_ a different matter. There are some expensive programs out there, but most home users will never need Bezier curves, even when they learn how to spell them! OTOH, Elements provides some limited drawing in that mode and, KeyNote and Pages also offer that option.

Of course, none of these are provided free by Apple as AW was. But buying all the above, even at full retail will be a lot cheaper than paying MS upgrade costs. And the upgrade costs range from $ 0.00 ( GC ) to $79 ( Elements ) [except for iWorks, of course, which never "upgrades"].
