Hello AUGD List... I have been a member of the Portland Oregon MUG
for many years and while we have all seen many changes in the way
personal computers are used there seems to be some large scale trends
that may require dramatic changes in the way MUGs function. I'll
briefly outline the main areas of concern and hopefully some people
on the list will offer comments and/or solutions.
There seems to be two primary areas where this change is occurring.
The first is how most Macs are being marketed and sold as an
"everything-you-need-in-one-box" communication/entertainment
appliances. While this approach helps new users to get started there
appears to be a growing number of Mac owners who are not aware of the
benefits of adding to the contents of "the-box". Compounding this is
the emergence of home entertainment center computers that are always
online. The second area of change is a growing misconception that
everything you need for successful Mac computing can be found
exclusively online.
If everything your Mac need comes in the shipping carton and all your
additional computing needs can be found on the net, who needs a user
group? While I acknowledge that there are some people who just don't
like joining groups, I know that there are many benefits to joining a
MUG.
So here's the question for you to respond to... should MUGs adapt to
these changes in personal computing, and if the answer is yes, then
what should the new MUG look like? Thanks... JM
