I'll echo Chuck's reply to this - it is very good advice.

An interesting posting to our TMUG email list.

I had been watching the "My Dream App" event unfold and thought, "hey maybe our group should try something like this, albeit on a smaller scale." I posted a "feeler on our list serve" I got an interesting reply. A member thought that the best a local UG could do is be a resource for local Mac interests. That is, a place where Mac professional meet Mac users. In telling me this, he revealed his view of a UG as being purely informational.

In a traditional sense, that is true. We hold a meeting about a subject. people attend and get information. Our website is full of information, our list serve is informational, etc...

What I am trying to do is to expand our UG's offerings. And not in a structured way, but in a way that members will feel spontaneous about joining in. I thought the "My Dream App" might be a vehicle for this - it could offer many a chance to learn something new and break the cycle of passively attending meeting.

I have to keep trying, old habits are hard to break. Eventually, though, something will click and it will grow. But, I feel that allowing TMUG to be nothing more than a place for information is a cul-de-sac for the group.

Please, go back and re-read what Chuck had to say, it is good advice.

BTW: regarding our Macs as "everything-you-need-in-a-box" Macs also come with Python, PHP, Apache server. mySQL will slide on nicely, there is Unix is there somewhere :-D - your Mac some with "everything-you-need-in-a-box" to do some very advanced stuff. Yes, you have everything you need. Instead of a informational lecture about how to use, why not a group project that uses this stuff (or iLife) that is my approach.

Cheers!

So here's the question for you to respond to... should MUGs adapt to these changes in personal computing, and if the answer is yes, then what should the new MUG look like? Thanks... JM
