Hi there
I just thought I'd pass the following on. I'm the current president of iMug
and we've been working for the last couple of years on this project. If you
happen to be in Melbourne during December please stop by for a visit.
Although I'm stepping aside as President of iMug, please feel free to
contact me or the new President for more details.
It should be noted that this even has been held without significant support
from Apple.
=================
Starting 2 December and running until 30 December 2006, iMug and Museum
Victoria will host an exhibition, showing how the Apple computer has
revolutionised the way ordinary people do things.
The story will be told via 5 revolutions¹, describing how Apple completely
changed the way we work and play. From desktop publishing and producing
images, to creating videos and making music, Apple put the personal into
computing.
Plan now to see the only collection of its kind in the world, with the
possible exception of one at Cupertino.
This iMug Museum project represents a huge journey. From the seed of an idea
for an Apple collection, through to sourcing the key parts of Apple's
history and creating an exhibit, we believe that we've captured the key
elements of what makes Apple special. And it is a bunch of iMug enthusiasts
that have done all this!
Also, in what is believed to be the first Museum Widget in Australia has
been developed for Museum Victoria by Marc Edwards and Brad Gale of iSlayer.
Developers of the popular the iStatPro and IceTV Widgets, at the request of
the Melbourne based Internet Macintosh User group (iMug), Marc and Brad
turned their hand to developing a Widget to promote the Community
Collections exhibitions of Melbourne Museum.
If you want to find out what are the current and forthcoming community
exhibitions at Melbourne Museum, check it out on your Widget! It may be
Vintage Christmas decorations in December or Snow Domes in Janissary. But
more likely it is the December exhibition mounted by iMug titled "The Apple
effect: a collection of revolutions that changed your life". This wide
ranging exhibition of Apple-related objects tells the story of how the Apple
computer has revolutionised the way people do things. You can download your
Museum Widget at
http://www.imug.com.au/widget/
iMug has been the driving force behind this development with iSlayer¹s
developing the Widget and then donating it to Museum Victoria.
The accolade for the world¹s first Museum Widget goes to the Rijksmuseum of
Amsterdam. Its Rijkswidget (downloadable from
http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/widget?lang=en/) and it allows you to view a
different work from the Museum¹s collection every day. And the flip side
provides more information about the work and the painter. The Widget
brokered by iMug is in the same Museum Widget tradition!
