Interesting idea, Jo. Two big obstacles:
1. Getting author's permission. This issue has come up on TMC-NLC
before
- one author will authorize for one use but not another, someone else
for the second but not the first. Of course, you could make it that if
an author submits it, they are automatically granting a specific usage
license, but that would have to be spelled out.
Using flickr as an example - I license my photos (which have
automatic feeds) using a creative commons liscense - a Attribution,
Non Commercial, Share-Alike license. Creative commons is an example
of human understandable licenses.
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/
Obviously if content is not "free" then there are other considerations
2. Constructing the feeds: Are you thinking about coding the feed by
hand? If so...wow. You must have lots of time on your hands.
I did it by hand because I vaguely understand the safari rss syntax
(and am a geek at heart).
A quick way is to create a "collection" of feeds in Safari ( a
bookmark folder) and then using the "Show all RSS Feeds" choice in
the bookmark - it automatically aggregates all the feeds in the
folder into one big one - and then you can copy the url.
If you're not a Safari user, then yes - you can use your favourite
newsfeed aggregator to achieve the same thing. I'm a fan of choice as
well as ease of use - and not everyone uses Safari.
What is needed is a common standard and method for aggregation of
multiple feeds - that is similar across platforms and programmes, and
the technically simplest way -- if you're talking about an aggregated
feed specific to a user group with set tastes and types of content --
is to combine feeds server side and only output one feed - once again
there are issues with licensing..
