First off, my apologies to Gary Kampel - It isn't that your question was out of the realm of possibility for this list, you asked it at an opportune time. With that said:

I briefly went back at looked at this list archive. In the recent past, a long thread on the list was "Why are Australians and New Zealanders 2nd class citizens" - I glanced over the first post on the subject, then deleted every other post on the subject - it had ZERO to do with UG's. Yet, it was very popular on this list.

Also popular was, Hacking into a MacBook in 60 seconds or less, and if you read through this thread, it too seems to be unrelated to UG's. Except, computer security is always going to be a topic for UG's.

Now, yes it becomes problematic to try and moderate this. Nobody should really have to. But, what I suggest is that this list is poorly subscribed. I would love to be proved wrong -

But, let's find out. I am going to post a roll call email. And with this email, i have given notice. The point isn't to say "hey, this list blows" The point is to discover with the least amount of effort possible, who out there actually is reading this list and cares enough about UG's to respond. yup, it may sound silly to folks like Chuck Joiner or Sandy Foderick. But, I would really like to know who out there is for UG's and is willing to do the least effort possible, respond to an email.

Watch for the email.

I cannot help myself in suggesting that the AUGD list has become a reflection of what user groups have become.
Gutter sniping, bickering, condescending, leadership that has driven away people that have turned to MUGs and listserves for support and guidance.
How many MUG leaders will fess up that they have lost valuable resources i.e. contributers to their MUG because of the type of behaviors/comments made by the "Leaders" on this list?
If someone took the time to join a listserve or a MUG and asks a civil question and the response is to humiliate and chastise that person then it only stands that the number of participants will dwindle and the quality of the list and our MUG will suffer.
Yes, Google, MacFixit, Version Tracker, Apple Knowledge Base, and the Take Control series have replaced many of the information services that MUGs and Mac related listserves have provided over the past.
But not to recognize that many people just want to have a sense of belonging and to have human support is ignorance.
Just my thoughts and well within the parameters of the AUGD mission statement.
