Danger! Will Robinson! Danger!

Triangle MUG is <100 (we're addressing that) and not only to we NOT use .mac nor a hosting service. but, we have our own Mac OS X server at a colocation service. This has many advantages.

1. Not only do we get to use our own domain name, but TriangleMUG members get a @tmug.org email address, 1 gb of webdisk space, you can access it though finder (webDAV) or we have added FTP, a weblog (OS X server has that built in) and more.

2. We get to control what is on the server - it gives us more options for the website. At TMUG.ORG we use MediaWiki (same as Wikipedia and it is free, too) for the website. Now TriangleMUG members can log in and add/change content to their heart's desire.

3. By going this roue, the group has a project to get involved with. And this is the point for a UG.

This isn't going to be a route for all groups, this is very time consuming. But, I hope you'll reconsider using group size as a basis for what you do.

Plain, simple, covers the basics. I don't see any huge issues right off the top.

Our club site is done with iWeb (about which I can rant for some time, but that's another issue) and serves the purpose. The point that a lot of folks miss, I think, is that these MUG sites are, in a lot of cases like ours, 'serving' an audience of <100 people. We had great discussion in our MUG exec about paying for domain hosting, expanding/improving the site etc. I pointed out that for <100 people the return on investment is going to be minimal.
