We keep things really simple at the Beijing Macintosh User Group. To
the member, all they need as a member is a simple BeiMacPass (that's
our membership card). Easy as that. They then use it across our whole
BeiMac Union -- even in different groups (like our Beijing iPod User
Group).
How they get the card is a little bit more ... than what I've
described above. Basically, a member needs membership with at least
one of our Union organizations which are entitled to accept members.
(We do this since there are a lot of Union organizations -- but some
are just websites and libraries, and there are two MUGs -- these two
are entitled to accept members.) Their membership ID is based on the
first group they enter, even if they then join another group and
leave their first group.
If they join another group, they keep the very same BeiMacPass --
only our central member database reflects the change. They don't need
to swap cards or anything.
The BeiMacPass, by the way, is "home" at both the group the members
is in _and_ the whole BeiMac Union. Moreover, the same card works
across Asia-Pacific; all organizations in the Asia-Pacific Mac Union
recognize the BeiMacPass.
An executive at our group is proposing to institute different
membership levels. However, that would compromise our "one-card-fits-
all" solution, so we're currently hoping to keep it really simple for
the member. For the member, it should boil down to just holding a
BeiMacPass -- nothing more.
And yes, at present, this whole thing is FREE.
