BeiMac is five today.
Five years ago, seven Mac people -- from Switzerland, China, the US,
Canada, Australia, Japan and Germany -- got together in a meeting
room in China's tech hub -- Zhongguancun, Beijing -- and formed the
Beijing Macintosh User Group. In the room next door were even more
Mac geeks.
These seven Mac people wanted to mix and mingle with more Mac people
in the capital. They built a community for Mac folks that did its bit
in the Beijing Mac arena. Membership grew by leaps and bounds,
forming a formidable force that is now over 330 strong.
Over the past five years, BeiMac has stuck to what it does best --
building a Mac community -- and has continued to grow. We've been
through some historic times: the continued adoption of Mac OS X and
all of its major releases, the introduction of such historic and
classic products such as the iPod and the iMac G4, as well as the
move over to Intel chips. We've stuck with Apple through thick and
thin, and we're growing with every passing day.
We've transcended the borders of a usual user group. We're now part
of the BeiMac Union, a massive collection of Mac resources which has
a resource library, an iPod group, a Mac encyclopedia, and more. The
newsletter is in progress as we speak, and we're preparing for our
huge party on March 24, 2007.
We've moved beyond the Chinese capital. We're an active part of the
Chinese Mac community -- and of the world Mac community, too. We've
been to Macworld in 2006 and you can count on our timely presence
again in 2008. And we've just set up liaison offices in Xiamen,
Taipei and North America. It's no longer a "capital-only" thing.
We've co-founded the Asia-Pacific Mac Union, and we're hoping to link
up with more Mac people around the world.
We've come a long way since March 2, 2002. And yet, that date is
still special to us. We haven't changed since that date -- in terms
of one core, gut-level thing; we're still a Mac community. And you
can trust that we'll continue to support the crowd that thinks
different for years to come.
Happy 5th birthday, BeiMac.
