Understood and I sympathize to a point.
As a matter of record, same policy happened with Tiger and of course
if you are new to the UG community you would not know this. However,
given your "enthusiasts" position, you should not object to buying a
copy because you are then supporting the company you are enthusiastic
about. :-)
Instant gratification often incurs a surcharge. In a perfect world
(and maybe for 10.6) things would happen as you want but I don't
think a week from release to offering is really unreasonable because
if it was offered the day of the the release you still would not get
it for a number of days anyway so you still would not want to wait if
you are that eager. :-)
That is why I suggested the only way to get it REALLY fast is to
offer the download scenario and that process is fully in place by
Apple already for other affiliations. This is no secret so I am not
breaking any confidentiality. For $500/yr you can be part of the
entire beta seed program, getting to download all releases. This was
too rich for my blood though so I waited like the cattle to get my
copy the following week.
One more last perspective: Holding you back from your own "sins" of
installing on the day of release might be a blessing to some. :-)
Often leaping blindly in cutting edge technology has too many
surprises.

I, as well as many of the others, had no idea that Apple would offer

So waiting would never have entered our minds.
Who of the enthusiasts could wait anyway?

By the time Apple make the NFR copies available for ordering, we

too late,
again.
Apple has offered you an NFR within ONE week of release. Seems
reasonable to me. If you can't wait a week, that is not Apple's
problem, that's yours. It's a WEEK, not a month! You need to keep a
perspective.
The ONLY thing I would think could be offered is a download of the
image file, same as developers get. If you have the bandwidth and
inclination to download a multi-gig file, then you would have it
faster so that is where I would spend my energy on change.
