As I recall, Apple usually makes NFR copies of their software available within a day or three of its commercial release. The cost has never exceeded $5 (US) + s&h. Yes, I know its sometimes longer than three days, but that's not the point.
Budgets for clubs can be tight. So many MUGs ask me how they can raise money. Some clubs have membership dues, some ask for donations at each meeting, some are flying by the seat of their pants. (Some get endowments for well-off members, but that isn't most of us.)
Think of this (less than $10) NFR copy as saving you money you didn't have to raise to use the most up-to-date computer operating system the planet has ever seen.
I'm not sure what some people want from Apple, Inc.? I read in Illusions, "You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however."
Apple is changing. They're not just a computer maker anymore ... they're not just a software maker anymore.
Things change. That's life. Our challenge is to adapt ... to excel ... to work for it.
Thank you Apple, for the challenge (and the Leopard).

Hey folks...
I think that you're missing a key point here.
Sure, the NFR is intended for demo purposes, but the discussion so far
has been that "first impression" demo that we're all anxious to deliver.
But that's not the bigger picture.
Giving each MUG an NFR assures that you can upgrade you group's primary
or demo Mac with the current version of the OS, to support not just that
first demo, but all the demos and activities you'll deliver going forward.
In short, they just gave your group a $129 (retail) donation (less
shipping and handling) on software that you'll use every single time you
boot the machine (something you can't say for virtually any other
software your group receives as a donation) and allowed you to stay
current legally.
Sounds to me like a "thank you" is in order.
