I think this is a very important issue for user groups to be discussing. Bravo, Emirates for bringing it up.
My view is that it is important for user groups to help members get the most from their investment. Be a place of learning and sharing. In the course of that endeavor, we run into to right and wrong issues.
I don't believe unlocking or hacking the iPhone elevates to the level of running afoul of right to use of the iPhone, at least to my knowledge, so, fair waring.
Now, as a user group leaders I hope we strive to be a source of accurate and useful information. With regard to hacking and unlocking the iPhone, we should keep the following in mind:
1. Apple has stated that if you hack or unlock your iPhone, you void your warranty.
2. Apple has stated that if you hack or unlock your iPhone, it may not work in the future.
3. Apple just updated the iPhone software, version 1.1.1 is the current version as of September 28th. According to numerous reports, ALL UNLOCKED iPHONES NO LONGER WORK. Hacked iPhones reset to their unhacked state. Many hacking methods no longer work.
A word of caution regarding hacking. Every hack I have seen is to add a feature or utility to the iPhone. This doesn't mean that there aren't nefarious hackers out there. And the law of unintended consequences begs us to consider that a harmless hack may not be. It is a good thing that Apple is discouraging hacks.
My view is that hacking and unlocking are legit uses of the iPhone. You purchased the equipment, do with it what you will. Further, user groups are places for people to share information. Just remember, if your group become a place where the unwitting learn to damage a sizable investment, that doesn't serve your group well and it doesn't serve our community well. And you may be inviting those that would have an evil use for the iPhone.
For groups here is the US, well, there are far to many uses of the iPhone to devote resources to features it doesn't have. But, I understand the desires of user groups in areas where the iPhone is not yet available. That is a difficult position to be. And it is also part of human nature to be curious; can I get the iPhone to do this and that. Finding out and learning are good, but fair warning and serve your group well.
(as a side note, U.S. Americans deplore anything that slows the spread of information, I think that is evident in my post.)
Good luck and sorry, this ended up being a little long,
