This is not my experience. In fact, Apple sales reps have referred our last few members. I've even been contacted by people in the States who are moving to Germany who were referred to us by their local Apple Store employees.

For example Apple Store employees (at least in Boston) are told not to volunteer info about the local AUGs to new Apple customers. The customers have to discover the find a user group webpage independently or ask a direct question to the employee. It was explained to me by one employee that there is too much duplication of service between AUGs and the .Mac accounts being promoted with each computer purchase.
Just my two cents.
