To Hank,
Although it wasn't especially positive, I still appreciate your response.
I think for an additional one hundred (100 euro) an iphone can be
unlocked from AT&T when it is purchased in Europe. It is my
understanding that this is the official way it is done and that these
iphones can, and have been, used with at least the main
telecommunications providers in Australia.
I am interested in having Optus as my telecommunications provider but
they mentioned that the iphone may not be fully supported at present.
That is, as the iphone has not yet been released in Australia.
So I will probably wait.
I wish you well. The iphone is a great product and I look forward to
using one (1) as they have a big screen, are compact and can
revolutionize organization and convenience.
The iphone is considerably better than an electronic organizer and
separate mobile phone as one's schedule can be stored externally in
google calendar. So for this reason if the iphone is lost or stolen,
well, just change the email account password (or portal password) and
(especially if your files are stored in email or your portal), well,
then you still have access to your information but no one else does.
I mean I could go on and on about all the features of this amazing
phone, but I was initially drawn to it for simply, convenience and
peace of mind reasons.
So I wish you well. The iphone is a great product.
John

I wouldn't want to speculate but someone else here said that the iPhone
would be available in Australia later this year.
>Oh and if I was to have a cousin of mine purchase an iphone for me on

Right now, that would be a BIG problem. Last summer, hmm, that's the
Northern Hemisphere summer, roughly July to September, people found
ways to open the iPhone to use with cell services other than the official
providers. This was shut down by a later firmware update. In some cases
those users were left with a non-functioning iPhone and, when functionality
was restored through Apple supplied methods, those phones would
not work except with the official cell service providers (in the US that
would be ATT).
Even if you were bring in an iPhone from outside Australia, I think
there is a good chance it wouldn't work at all in Australia unless you
spent the extra money for an Apple-supplied unlocked phone. It is
my understanding that some countries such as France mandate that
an unlocked version of cell phone models must be offered by cell phone
service providers but it doesn't mean the companies have to sell the
unlocked version for the same "low" price either.
My biggest concern is that you might end up with a non-functioning
iPhone.
If I were you, I'd just wait until it's officially released in Australia.
If you can't resist, for the general "cool" factor get an iPod Touch.
Hank
