If I have OS 10.5 on the G4's internal HD, and have OS 10.4 & 9 installed on my external Firewire HD, can I start up from the external OS 9 or 10.4 when I want to? then switch back (by restarting) in Leopard? Or am I locked in to Leopard forever?

There are no problems, because installing Leopard won't affect the possibility that he actually can boot from every bootable device that will be listed during startup while holding down the Option key. In addition, selecting at this stage the startup device will not change the default selected startup device saved in System Preferences.
