In the past, Apple gave registered user groups a free mac.com account.
Check with your regional MUG liason about this deal. One group that I
belong to, Gold Coast Mac in Miami FL, had such account and used it to
post photos, and their iCal of meetings, sig's and events.
It helps to be registered with Apple. Many times vendors have
contacted my group (South Florida Final Cut Pro UG) because they found
it listed on the Apple UG page.

Another option is to create an online community with Ning.com. To give
you an idea how that works, the Southern Louisiana FCPUG has a Ning
site:

As for getting the word out and building the group, partnerships is a
good way to get started. If there are computer stores in the area, let
the managers know that your group exists. Team up with a school that
offers editing classes and announce meetings in the school newspaper.
Good luck!
