Au contraire, mon ami. You can add them directly to your list.
In Yahoo Groups, go to INVITE, then click on ADD MEMBERS at the bottom. There you'd enter their real name and e-mail address.
Your member could opt out to NOT receive mail, but I found that setting up memberships to receive only SPECIAL NOTICES stops this problem. Make sure you follow up with a phone call to let members know that the Yahoo email is a good thing, right?
Also, moderating the list to stop unnecessary posts to members keeps people from complaining about too much e-mail clogging their mailboxes.

Hi Eugene,
We have a Yahoo!Group for our MacPower-MUG group in Pennsylvania.
It has a couple draw backs. Members have to elect to join the group. Membership is voluntary. Ours is private so that only members can visit it. But when we have a discussion, email only goes out to those that agreed to join and that is half our membership right now.
We can use it to post our Bylaws, Officers, and other club business.
