We have had locations that were free and locations that charged. We
are currently in transition between the two (again) because the free
location (public library) decided they wanted our regular meeting
night for their own purposes. Consistency is important in providing
meetings to a group of people. The larger the group, the more
important a consistent time, date and location are. Members have to be
able to schedule our meetings in with the rest of their lives - you
know: scout meeting nights, school band practice, evening yoga
classes, bridge night, karate lessons, PTO meetings, bowling night,
garden club meetings, etc. - oh, and time to just sit at home with the
wife and talk or hang in front of the TV and be couch potatoes for a
change! She has a schedule too, and we need to find times when our
schedules intersect. Or maybe you aren't in the stage of your life
when you have other commitments yet?
Another user group we know of met at a local community college, free,
but they never knew what room they were going to be meeting in. How do
you publicize a location in the local press to draw in new members
when you don't know where to tell people to go?
We managed to hang onto the free library location for a couple of
years before they bumped us, which is pretty good. The location we are
moving back to now is one we used before for several years which
worked pretty well for us although it isn't ideal - and it does cost
us a fair amount. Our hope is to lock in at least a year there so our
members will know what to expect. Our members also know that we are
always open to suggestions for other locations that will meet our
needs and give us a guaranteed schedule on our regular night for a
year or more.
