Is there one right or wrong answer? Might the focus (or not) on
Classic also be determined by the composition of the MUG?
What does your own group want? need? What is attitude of YOUR
officers, directors and members about putting any attention on the
older Classic software and hardware?
Our group went through similar questions at the board level when we
made the transition from "The Syracuse Apple Users Group" which also
supported the older Apple and Apple II platforms to the "Syracuse
Macintosh Users Group" which made the decision to focus on the Mac.
There were a few members who still had Apple II hardware but I don't
think any at that point who did not have Macs also. It had become
impractical to maintain a disk library of Apple II disks that just
sat. Presentations never focused on Apple II and nobody asked for
them. I don't even recall that there were questions about them at Q&As
anymore.
Certainly every group is different and should decide its own needs
with regard to support of the Classic environment and apps, or for
that matter of older 680x0 and PPC Macs that run System 6, 7 etc.
exclusively. If the group does have members who need support in that
realm, perhaps one option is to split it off as a separate user group
or special interest group. That allows those leaders who are
passionate about the topic to focus resources on it without always
broadening the scope of the group to what can become impossibly
diverse levels.
There are still Atari computer groups in existence which can be found
just by a search of the web!
