Yes, you should be discouraging AND disparaging UG members from using older OSs and software. It is really bad advice to tell someone to continue using outdated OS for production. Hiding behind "it's the economy that is making me do it" non sequitur is ill advised. (BTW: the way out of the econ mess is to spend money, not hoard it).
We have to look forward. Let me explain.
Say I come to your user group a new switcher. Then I have to listen to a Q and A session regarding ancient OS 9 "how to's." What am I going to take away from that?
I'll take away that the group is out of touch and only for people stuck in the past. Further, I'm betting this group above will come across a elitist, only for those that have been using the Mac the 1980's.
Then, the OP that started this conversation was asking how to keep OS 9 running when there are clear OS X options available. The user group that is spending its time trying to figure out how to keep OS 9 alive so that a user can keep an outdated application running when there are clearly OS X applications available, but, might require adjustment to the users process, is the UG that I will run away from the fastest!!! You are telegraphing "We are not changing, we will never change. We are not interested in those that want to learn the new"
Now, ask yourself. What is the best path for your group? Trying to reach out to the millions that have recently switched to the Mac? or stagnating with supporting OS 9,8,7? Do you want to help people adjust to the new (kind of sounds like why UGs developed in the first place, huh?) OR Or are you something else?
