We raffle off prizes every meeting, all donated, nothing ever paid for.
We've been doing really well this past year, also. We're a Final Cut
Users Group, so we're a little more focused on a single profession.
There are a handful of vendors who regularly donate to FCPUG's. Mostly
FCP plugins. We do not charge for raffle tickets, as we are sponsored
already, and money is no longer an issue for us. Everyone who attends a
meeting and puts their name and email on our sign-in sheet is a member.
Thus, everyone gets one ticket when they put their name and email on the
sign-in sheet. Raffle is held at the end of the meeting, as we had
folks come late, just in time for the mid meeting raffle, then leave
immediately afterwards. We raffle lowest priced to highest priced, it
builds more excitement. We introduce the prize first, then draw a
ticket. When someone wins a prize, they turn in their ticket, they're
then out of the running. Myself and my girlfriend run the meetings, I
pretty much own SLFCPUG, it's very much a solo effort (despite the pleas
for help over the years), and we do not participate in the raffle.
We've had a couple of very expensive major prizes donated by vendors
when they do presentations for us, but that's very rare.
With the exception of how we give out tickets, most FCPUG's follow the
format of the FCPUG Supermeet held at NAB every year.
