Same here in Connecticut. For our monthly, free raffle (for members only)
we have approx 3-4 raffle items. One item is something we purchased (for
less than $40 -- wireless mouse, iphone car charger, digital camera
accessory, etc.) The rest are items we acquired for free.

About twice a year we have a cash raffle for something substantial.
Typically no more than $200 value, however. We did raffle off a MacMini to
celebrate our 25th anniversary a few years ago. That was the biggest thing
we ever did. (It was an apple refurb that we bought for around $450 I
think. We lost a little money, but figured we would going into it.)

I'm going to float the idea of an iPad raffle at the next board meeting and
see if the idea gets some backing. I think it would be a great thing for
our holiday / December meeting.

The end of the night.

At an area Final Cut Pro User Group this became quite a problem, as on
several occasions, one person went home with more than one prize of
significant cash value. It gave people a bad taste in their mouths.
This year the group has changed to the rule that you can only take home one
prize. If you win an item and your name is drawn again, you can choose to
take the new item being raffled off, or keep what you have.
I think this is a good system.
At my Apple User Group, we only have 1 ticket per member for the "free"
raffle, so that prevents this occurring. For our cash raffles, we usually
only have 1 item on offer, so it's again not an issue.
