Generally the biggest raffle item cost no more than $200. Most times it's much less than that, although we have had more expensive items, but it tends to reduce the number who buy tickets to just a few. So we try to have a $100 ish item and a few othrs that can range from $10 to 25. Some items are donated or freebies.

We buy some from Apple, the local Best Buy, and software companies that donate their wares.

see above.

We let the first winner pick his/her own prize, which usually, but not all the time, is the most expensive item. Then each winner gets the next choice.

yes.

No

NA

Yes.

We've done quite a number of iPods, and once or twice, a computer. See above, but generally, once the price of the item goes above $200, it can be problematic for a number of reasons.

Yes we charge for tickets. Members get to buy more tickets for the same amount of $ as non-members, which helps our membership rolls.
> Can non-members enter?
Yes. See above.
> Can your 'Committee' enter the raffle?
Yes.
> When do you draw your raffles - mid way though the meeting or at the end?
2/3's through the meeting. It becomes the time when we generally switch from general interest demos to more advanced stuff.
To add to this discussion, we generally don't make any money on the raffles. Many times we lose money. BUT, we've always add a few to the membership rolls at each meeting because they want to get extra tickets. We mostly use the membership money to buy snacks and drinks we serve at the meeting, but we have used that money to buy items to help put on the meetings, like a USB camera to use when demoing iPods, iPHones, and iPads. So we have an incentive to have attractive raffle items at each meeting.
Our members love the raffles, but we do try to publicly call them prize drawings, as raffles can be illegal. You have to be at the meeting in person to win a prize, as there are laws against hold prize drawings where the winner isn't on hand.
Since everyone can buy more than one ticket, sometimes one person can win more than one prize. We have wrestled with this, and we do wish we had, at the beginning, stated that no matter how many tickets you purchase, you can only win one prize. But since we didn't, we ask winners to not claim anymore than one prize a night, but we ask that they do do so voluntarily.
