Thanks for all the comments on how your groups conduct Raffles... it
seems that the good old fashion "draw out of a hat" style still works
extremely well for most groups.
All this discussion about Raffles also go me thinking about what do
User Groups actually raffle off at their meetings...
So a few more questions for you all...
What sort of prizes do you raffle off?
Hard Drives, iLife, iWorks, DiskWarrior, Speakers
iPhone/iPod clock radio docks, iPods, Digital Cameras,
Photoshop Elements, Office (Home version), Magic Mouse
and more.
Where do you get your prizes from?
All over. Microcenter, MacMall, Sam’s club, where ever we find a deal.
Are they donated or do you buy them?
Most are purchased new. Some are refurbished. Rarely a donation.
If you have multiple prizes, how do you work who gets what prize?
We have multiple prizes to choose from, but only one winner per meeting.
Do the Winners get to select their own prize from the selection?
Yes, always.
Do you have a set order that prizes are given out?
No.
If so, how do you determine the order they are given out?
N/A
Do you have a raffle every meeting?
Yes
Do you do a 'major' raffle where you raffle something 'big' like a
computer or an iPod at all?
Yes.
Do you charge for tickets?
Yes for the monthly raffle.
Or is entry free to anyone who attends?
Free for monthly door prizes for all who attend.
Can non-members enter?
Yes. (Everyone’s money is good :-) )
Can your 'Committee' enter the raffle?
Yes. We are members too, we just do more work. No one is paid so excluding
committee members just makes it harder to get committee members. It also reduces the
amount collected for the raffle.
When do you draw your raffles - mid way though the meeting or at the
end?
It varies depending on how the meeting is going, but usually mid way.
Note:
We have a raffle each month where attendees buy tickets to enter. Winner has choice of one prize from multiple items.
We have door prizes each month where all you do is sign in to enter. Random number program. One prize to a person per meeting.
We have a cash attendance prize for members only. All members are automatically entered, but you MUST present to win.
The cash pot goes up $10 each month the prize is not claimed.
We have a free annual raffle for members only. Members get a free ticket for each meeting they attend during the year. The prize
is awarded at our December meeting. The prize has been an iPod Touch since we started this raffle.
We also purchase door prize items, but many are donated.
Examples:
Computer/Digital photography books (new or lightly used)
TakeControl ebooks (burned to CD)
Flash drives
Pack of printer paper
CDs
DVDs
Compressed Air cans
Older computer items donated by members
Small computer tool kits
Microcenter often has bins of inexpensive but useful items.
One of our members is authorize to purchase items he feels are useful and
attendees could use or want, up to an amount of $20 per meeting. Usually we
don’t spend that much and hold back purchases until we see what else may show up.
We try to always have a few door prizes, but no set number.
