The one idea I have to add to this discussion is consider allowing the winners
to choose from the available prizes.
Alex Lindsay of Pixelcorps advised me to do that years ago, and the InDesign
User Group here in SF has always done that.
Everything is the same - up to drawing a winning ticket -
but instead of the ticket being attached to a prize - the winner goes to the
raffle table and chooses.
Avoids people getting things they already have, can't use or aren't interested
in. Since we've been doing that we have a much higher rate of people coming back
to me telling me how they are using the prize. Nothing's perfect, you just want
to do what you can.
For larger items we often do an essay contest, or people turn in contact forms
for the company - they know beforehand that entering the contest with a contact
form means they are sharing their personal info and the company may contact them
for business purposes.
I do an essay contest mainly to make people think - do I really want this, will
I use it. I always do this for conference passes since people may have to take
time off to be there, and/or pay for travel and lodging. When we gave these away
without an essay contest or really going over the details we were having an
awful - "gee I don't want to do that anymore" issue, and sometimes these are not
transferable. If they are transferable I try to keep a "backup" list of people
who did want to go. Now people are using these opportunities.
We stopped selling tickets because we had a couple of people who would put down
a $100 bill and always win. We upped admission to $10 and it includes
refreshments and one raffle ticket. Special occasions - like for Halloween
people will get an extra ticket if they come in costume. Admission does not
cover all our expenses but we do have sponsors. Over the course of the year we
take in about the same amount of money - probably a little less than when we
were selling raffle tickets.
My feelings about complaints about the raffle is that if members can articulate
them and we can incorporate and improve it we will. But I always offer the
option of dropping it altogether. I am limiting the total number of sponsors at
this time. Life is not always fair, so you can either offer something where
everyone gets the same - like a goodie bag, or all attendee benefit, but I have
found in general one ticket per person does spread it around if they stay to the
end of the meeting. Our next meeting our sponsor is giving all attendees a free
plugin instead of one big prize - I like it, we will see what works in terms of
attendance.
