I don’t think that what is going on is that AUG’s are a natural for seniors. I
think that the current crop of seniors (mostly Baby Boomers) are of a
particular background and have common experiential history, and thus have a
certain mindset that AUG’s can easily attract them and cater to them.
I think that the next upcoming crop of seniors will be very different types of
individuals. I don’t think that they will have any interest in AUG’s
whatsoever.
One can easily see this in other hobbies. For instance, I’m an avid fan of
motorcycles. Here in the U.S. Baby Boomers LOVED motorcycles. Unfortunately,
when the Baby Boomers are gone, the motorcycle industry in the U.S. is slated
to do a lot of contraction, because even the next generation of folks right
behind them have little to no interest in motorcycles. And motorcycle
manufacturers have been almost completely unable to attract young people to
motorcycling. It isn’t that the sport is one the is ideal for seniors, it’s
that the current generation of seniors were the last folks that took an
interest in motorcycling.
You can put this down to the Internet, the popularity of video games and mobile
devices, the fact that Baby Boomers had more liquid money and free time than
generations that came after them, or whatever you like. But I don’t think that
catering to seniors is a sustainable plan in the long term for AUG’s.
In the short term, there is another problem that I haven’t brought up
previously. Many of the AUG’s that still exist and are active, are still
around due to the efforts of just one person, or maybe just a few people, all
folks who are aging, and who do a LOT. Those over-worked souls are getting
old, tired, and just worn out. And it’s extremely hard to find idiots..er…fine
people, who are younger and willing to take over and work as hard to keep their
AUG alive.
