Okay, I now realize that my subject line is a little misleading.
It appears that there are two data types used by Mail automation blocks: Mail Messages and Mail Items. I am not sure what the distinction is here but it appears that these two types cannot be mixed. The automator GUI is a little bit misleading here because outputs and inputs of these two types connect up fine. If you actually run, you end up with the below conversion error in the log.
Does anyone know what the motivation for having two types is? Is there a work around for conversion? The only workaround I can see is to always use the "Find Mail" block which outputs Mail Messages (instead of Mail Items.) It is possible that I am still missing something completely.
