A timed electric outlet costs only a few bob. And when you're away from
home, the loud hissing could make potential burglars think your house is
filled with snakes. Bonus. ;)

Seriously, however, I have a pretty great set of Altec powered speakers.
That is, they take electrical power (and sound great!) They also hiss when
not in use, but my volume control actually controls the hiss volume.
Actually, they have their own volume control too, and either that controller
or the Mac's volume controller will do the trick.

So, if it were a problem, I could script the volume control for my Mac. (I
don't. I just reach over and turn the on-speaker volume down.) Could that
be a solution for you ... Does the hiss respond to volume control?
