I'm from the *nix world, and I recently switched to OS X for the BSD
core. I've experimented with Automator and I'm still learning it (I do
love the shell hooks), but I can't offer a lot beyond that.
I went to TRS-80 Elementary, Apple Jr. High, DOS High school, and
Windows for Associate(s). I did a bachelors in Unix/Linux, but I'm
still earning my Masters in OS X. ;)
At least I'm enrolled...
I doubt I'll ever achieve a PhD in ADA, though.
;)
Kind regards,
CB

CB thanks for responding to my post... yes I'd checked that out as
well previously and can indeed cd to /Volumes/<share> and read its
contents from a terminal...
SMB isn't generally quirky from Windows or Linux machines these days
and I'd kinda hoped that in the spirit of "Mac-easy" that it'd be less
quirky on a Mac as after all it's not exactly bleeding edge tech to be
able connect to an NTFS share something else is going on here but as
Automator workflow steps are drag-and-configure and there aren't that
many things to configure in the "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Copy
Finder Items" steps I don't see how much room there is for me to have
been misconfiguring and certainly all visual feedback when setting up
the steps seems to indicate correct config i.e., I am in fact
explicitly selecting the SMB volume by name from the dropdown

David - does the share get disconnected or possibly mounted
exclusively after you connect to it?
SMB is very quirky...
From a terminal, can you cd to /Volumes/<share> and read it's contents?

I'm trying to setup a simple Automator script to backup my Entourage
database to a shared SMB folder on my LAN
There are six steps in my workflow:
1. close Entourage
2. close Microsoft Database Daemon
3. Get Specified Servers (i.e., same as "Connect to Server..." in
Finder using smb://) <smb://)>
4. Connect to Servers
5. Get Specified Finder Items (i.e. my local Entourage database)
6. Copy Finder Items
The first five steps work just fine
The last step always fails with a "Can't read directory contents
/Volumes/<share>" error message
For the last step in this workflow I've tried specifying the
destination of the Copy action in all the possible combinations
i.e., via Sidebar name, shared name, directly as the
/Volumes/<shared> name, etc. and all fail the same way
Note that I CAN INDEED connect to this shared folder just fine
manually in Finder and the credentials are saved in my KeyChain
Anyone have any ideas why the last step keeps failing?
Here is the log:
