I am just trying to get my first steps in setting up the Automation
on my new MacBook Pro with osx 10.6.1 and I quickly bumped in the
first problem. Basically I don' t understand how to save my
programmed workflow as a plug in or application.
I know that sound really stupid, I googled every tutorial on the
subject and all said simply to go in the file menu > save as and
choose to save it as plug in or application. Not so difficult!
The problem is that doesn' t matter which template I choose to begin
with, the save menu' never give me any choice.
and actually I can' t even choose where I want to save it !
In Snow Leopard, save options are based on the type of workflow you
choose when first creating the workflow. So, if you want to build an
application, you choose "Application" in the initial template
selection window when you create a new workflow. "Workflows" and
"Applications" can then be saved anywhere. Other types of workflows
must be saved into a specific location to work. Automator handles
this automatically, hence you don't have the ability to change the
save location. For example, in your screenshot, you've created a
"Service" workflow. When you save it, Automator automatically puts it
where it needs to go, so you don't have to... into the ~/Library/
Services folder in this case.
If you'd like to learn more about building Service workflows, check
out the latest episode (#26) of my Mac Automation Made Simple video
podcast series at... <http://www.automatedworkflows.com/tips/podcast.html

in Snow Leopard.
Also, if you want to learn more about Automator, my new book
"Automator for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Visual QuickStart Guide"
has just been sent to the printer. It covers pretty much all aspects
of Automator, and should be out very soon... <http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321685830
