This doesn't work for me in Snow Leopard either. Google "automator find birthdays snow leopard" and you'll find quite a few people with the same problem. The "Find People with Birthdays…" action appears to be broken in Snow Leopard.

Use the "Find Address Book People" action instead, and set the action parameters to look for birthdays. This works successfully for me (10.6.2).
