It depends which version of Word you're using, but with recent versions (2004 and 2008) you can start here:

The 2004 AppleScript Reference is still valid, I believe.

If you're also new to AppleScript, then you may find starting with Word (or Excel) to be a double challenge. If you're familiar with VBA for the Windows versions, there are a lot of similarities.
