I am not an expert either, but in recent digging there is a full library of commands available in the the AppleScript editor for iTunes. I would look into the insertion of an AppleScript into your work flow to remove the previous day song.
The scripts are fairly easy to write and there are numerous examples available within the OS and on the web.
Hopefully this will help.

ok, I'm not a programmer or an expert at automator but I'm trying to do something and maybe someone out there can help.
I'm having trouble with an action - it doesn't exist and I can't seem to get recorder to make it exist...
I'm creating a workflow that will put only one particular song in a specified playlist each day. I need to use the same playlist name every time as another automated program is searching for the playlist. I only want that ONE song in there each day and the song is dependent on the month/day of the year (ex: a halloween song on 10/31). I am able to create a workflow that adds a specific song to the playlist each day of the year by creating it as an iCal alarm - so far so good. However, I need to REMOVE the song from the previous day. There is an action that CREATES a play list so I'm thinking I could produce a workflow that creates a new playlist with the same name AFTER I delete the playlist. Then I can add the specific song to it - which is another action already in my library - for each day of the year.
So it would work like this:
1. Delete Playlist = Today's Song
2. Add Songs to Playlist (allows me to specify a new playlist, so I'll name it Today's Song)
Pretty simple except I need the Delete Playlist action.
How would I create it or does anyone have it for import?
Thanks
Andrew
