Hi Ciro and Lukas,

thanks for your suggestions. Ciro, I already use 'Get selected finder items' and  'Rename finder items' i can add text, replace text, make sequentioal, but it doesn't allow me to change first 5 characters (different in each file) does Automator have something such as replace X number of characters with Y

Lukas, thanks for this, but I'm a mac novice, I don't know how to write scripts........

Any suggestions welcome......

Hi Ciro, hi Micheal,

why use the Automator Suite for running the script? When creating your Project as a new one, just select "Service" for the Application Kind. Automator will ask you some details about the Application the Service will run in, so just select "Receive Files and Folders" and "from Finder", and hit okay - there you go! You may create your Script now, and as you save it, it will appear in the "Service"-Menu within the "Finder"-Tab at the top left corner on your screen (when Finder is the active Application). You now just select the files and hit the name of your script within the Services-Menu in the Finder-Tab, and it will run it for you. You can even assign a keyboard shortcut by opening System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Custom (or however the lowest category in the left part of the "Keyboard-Shortcuts-Window" is called, enter the Name of your Script as the Command name (mind capitalisation!), and your custom shortcut in the field that's meant for it, and after hitting okay, you're ready to go!

Hope, I could help.
Regards,

Lukas Rose

Great solution, Daniel. I didn't know that!

But, If Michael would like to try it through Automator, there are two functions to be added. Unfortunately my standard language isn't English, so I can't tell you how exactly these functions will be named in your Automator, but they must be something similar to what I say bellow.

Both functions are inside the Library "Files and Folders" (*1). You must start your script telling what to change with the function "Get Selected Items from Finder" (*1). Then the function "Replace Text" (*1).

This last function may do other things like "Add Text" or "Add Date". So you can call it as many times as you want, sequentially, for replacing or adding a prefix, adding date to the and of file name, etc. So with only one call, you can modify many parts of the file name.

Don't forget to save it!

Very important is to select all files right before running your script. The active selected files will be considered. Make sure that the files are the active ones in Finder. Sometimes we select the files we want and then we open the Automator suite. In this case, the active file is the Automator Suite Application itself and it will be the one to be affected. So open your Automator script, then select the files you want to change and finally click on the Run button.

Any doubts, please let me know.

Regards,
Ciro.

Hi Michael,

There is a Finder's script that allow you to do exactly that.

Its name is "Replace Text in Item Names" and you can find it in the script menu
bar on the right while you are in the "Finder".

You just have to answer the following question:

<PastedGraphic-1.pdf>

<PastedGraphic-2.pdf>
<PastedGraphic-3.pdf>

That's it!

Dan
