- Thread-topic: Automator help with Preview
Hi all, I need to do some urgent, but fairly basic image editing & have
been trying for the entire past 2 days to do a simple Automator
event/action with Preview and can't find any help online about this in
particular.
I just need to be able to select an area in an image using the rectangular
selection tool. the cropping part works via key command but it seems
Automator isn't able to record a selection properly (made by drawing the
selection for editing with the mouse pointer) within an image. I have
tried this in both Lion & Mountain Lion on 2 different Macs and get the
same result. I have also tried Photoshop and the same thing happens - so
it seems it has to do with an Automator limitation or bug. Automator
ignores the event when the workflow is played back. The cursor goes to
the correct location within the image but no selection is drawn. So
there's no way to do any editing that requires a selection within an image.
I have tried the 'Crop Images' action but this seems to require an image
input where I am just trying to work with an open image and make multiple
crops & edits within it. This built-in action might be of use for me if i
can get it to make crops on an open image, rather than dragging an image
onto it, making 1 crop, then saving, as i have other events/actions in the
workflow and need the cropping to happen while the image is already open,
and in between other actions.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Malcolm
