Hi Robert,

I suspect your point is that this list is rather quiet - I'd agree. I have a passing interest in Automator, so I don't read all of the messages.

Your approach to try and record a script is how I would have started, too. I might have then looked at AppleScript recording instead, but not confident it would have got you much further. I suspect after 2 years you either found a solution or gave up. I was curious, and it does seem as though someone else has written a Java program that might do what you want.

I posted a question to this list two years ago and never got a response:

I have delayed upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or later because I have a vast number of e-mail messages saved using AOL for Mac OS X, which is a PowerPC application that will not work with Lion. I want to save these messages, which are currently saved to my hard drive in AOL mail format, in text format instead (that is, "Save as" text, using the drop-down menu in the open/save dialog box).  (The newer versions of AOL software which are compatible with Lion are unable to open the old AOL for Mac OS X mail messages, although they can open them as text, as can Apple Mail.)  I have many, many hundreds of these messages.  Is there a way I can use Automator to save them in text (versus "mail") format in one fell swoop?  They are all saved to various subfolders (by correspondent's name) within a large "E-mails" folder.  Please note that they have been saved as individual mail messages to my hard drive, and are no longer in my AOL incoming mail cabinet or personal filing cabinet, so that I can't simply import them from that cabinet into Apple Mail.  And as they're currently saved, Apple Mail can't read or open them until they're re-saved as text.  I have never used Automator before, and tried to experiment using Record, but whenever I choose "Save" or "Save as" from within AOL, the Automator window disappears and the Recording stops.  Perhaps it thinks I am trying to "save" the Automator workflow, rather than trying to record the saving of a file in the Finder?  In the alternative, if there is some easy way to simply convert these saved AOL files into Apple Mail files, that would be great, too, but I don't think there is.  Can anyone help? Thanks very, very much.
