Issues setting characteristic notification state

| I'm writing an iOS app that connects with BTLE hardware. After connecting to the hardware, I switch the operation mode such that the hardware will now start sending data notifications. I'm able to detect the service and characteristic related to the data requested.
The issue is that when I request that the characteristic notification state be changed to 'YES', I get the following error,
"The operation couldn’t be completed. (CBErrorDomain error 0.)"
I know the hardware is sending the data, because if I close the app, the usual BTLE alert stating that a connected peripheral send information for an app is displayed.
Any idea what might be causing this issue?
