I think there is a bit of confusion here. Standard BR/EDR is not going away any time soon, and probably never. Bluetooth 4.0 introduced a new mode (Bluetooth Low Energy) while still advancing and promoting classical Bluetooth. You cannot do things like stereo streaming with Low Energy, so your fear is unfounded. Backwards compatibility is here to stay, and the 2 radios, modes and protocol stacks should be able to coexist in harmony for the foreseeable future.
